Michael Barsabal

Statistician

Michael Barsabal is a statistician at EconMAP, specializing in economic statistics, national accounting, and input-output analysis. Before joining the program, he worked as a Division Chief and Economist at the Philippine Department of Finance (DOF), providing policy advice and technical support in analyzing emerging fiscal issues and other global, regional, and sectoral developments in the country. At the DOF, Michael led the construction of the Philippine Input-Output Table and production of real-time indicators to monitor the fiscal impact of various legislative proposals. 

 Michael also worked as a consultant for the Asian Development Bank (ADB), where he was involved in the compilation of supply and use tables (SUT), tourism satellite accounts (TSA), and the update of ADB’s multi-regional input-output tables. Michael led the development of Social Accounting Matrices for Armenia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam and served as a resource person in various capacity-building workshops on the System of National Accounts (SNA) conducted by the ADB. 

 He began his career as a Teaching Fellow and Lecturer at the University of the Philippines, where he taught graduate-level microeconomic theory and mathematical economics, as well as undergraduate-level macroeconomics and econometrics. 

 Michael is a Ph.D. candidate in Economics at the University of the Philippines, where he also obtained his master's degree in the same field.
